Title: 爱情公寓 / iPartment
Aired: August 2009
Broadcast network: Jiangxi TV
Genre: Sitcom
Episodes: 20 (Season 1)

Main Cast:

iPartment (Chinese: 爱情公寓; pinyin: Ai qing gong yu), is a sitcom from Mainland China. It was first produced and aired by Jiangxi TV in August 2009, with 20 hour-long episodes. A second series has been greenlit after casting calls were being held, mentioned by the show's official blog. The i in the title is a reference to Ai, the Chinese term for "love".

The concept is loosely based on the American sitcom Friends, the show details the lives of seven people in their mid-to-late 20's who are neighbors in an apartment building. Each person has a profession of their own and often get into unknown escapades.

Although much of the show is filmed on location, iPartment contains a laugh track. The series uses a cinematic-style approach with fast-paced editing and transitions, much like the British comedy series Spaced. There are also frequent references to more recent events and culture in China, which are portrayed accurately.

iPartment tends to combine genres such as drama, mystery, thriller, slapstick and surrealism.

Hi, Watched the first episode of iPartment today. Thanks for the subbing! I'll download the second episode today and wait anxiously for the next ones.. :)
One thing about the subs, is it possible to change the placement of the subs... now they are sometimes on top of the hanzi and it makes my learning process a bit hard when I can't see them clearly :) Sorrry I don't mean to complain, just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

Heaven said...

Oh that is not a complaint, that is a good suggestion that I have told ALL subbers to do...only thing is...iPartment was one of those difficult segmenting and subbing projects (very painful to do)...we appreciate your comment and will TRY to fix the subs so all English and Chinese words are viewable:D Enjoy the show. I do find it very funny:D

I have another stupid question :) Why not soft subbing with SRT? I think in VLC you can select the position of the subtitles i.e. where the text is rendered on the screen --> no overlapping hanzi and english... well I'm sure you know about this, so maybe there is some point I'm missing :D

I've released softsubs on the viikii channel for this drama. It is a first draw, using viikii translations, with little editing from my part. So you'll realise there is a lot of errors witht he translations and the timing. Why we don't release softsub of high quality instead of hardsubbed? Part of it is that we've had bad experiences. We retrieved a lot of our subtitles on mysoju without any credit given to us. It is really sadening to see other takes credit of our work and discard our contributions as nothing not even thanking us for our work. We're not pay but we spend a huge amount of time on each episode and seeing people who stole our subtitles being thank for subbing and uploading a drama make me wanna stranggle someone. A hardsubbed video makes it harder to get the softsubs from it, and also people might be lazy and just upload ou video on streamming site without removing our credits. There is also another point. Most of the fansub who release chinese drama subbed in english release hardsubbed video, they might be a will to blend in. Release something that can eventually be compared with no shame with what other fansub release. There must be other reasons, if I think of any other I might post them.
Ipartment is kinda of a special case, we'll continue the subbing of this drama in cooperation with Doremii fansub, and they have a strict policy for their release. No upload on streamming site, nor softsub. They're slow to start of, they also wants to communicatemore with us on our forum (wich we don't have yet), to coordinate our effort.
As you can see we're still searching what we are and we might very well change our different policies.

Thanks for the clarification. I can see your point. It must be depressing to see other people being thanked for your work

From a learner's perspective though soft subs would be preferable. For example using programs like subs2srs is quite inconvenient with hard subbed material. Actually I'm quite surprised that soft subs in general are so rare when it comes to Chinese TV and movies. I'm also confused why there's so much media material available for people who study Japanese but when you try to find Chinese shows with translated subs there's almost nothing... Well I'm very grateful that you are doing something to increase the availability of Chinese TV-shows!

Lastly i would like to thank you all for the hard work in which you have done recently on all of your projects.

Thanks for your interest in oru projects. Unfortunately, there are just not enough people on the team to do much update on the status of the project episodes. Recently we have quite a nice number of newcomers, but many of our regular contributors has also went back to school, so again, we are short of contributors. For status of iPartment, we have subs done up to ep16, we just don't have time to edit, QC it as of now because we are focusing on HSDS. If anyone would like to come onto our team as iPartment editors or translators, please contact us. Our emails are in the Contact Us page of this blog.

This is such a great drama I hope you guys can continue uploading the episodes. There's no where else to watch this except here >.<

Pardon me if this has been answered elsewhere, but why is it that 15 episodes have been completed but only 4 are available?

Heaven and Earth said...

bec the softsubs for iPartment are complete for up to episode 15, while hardsubs are only up to episode 5.

Hi, big fan of iPartment, just wondering how the subs are going since the last update was back in November which was about 4 months ago now. No one else is subtitling this series. Hope I don't come off as unappreciative, I've done a little amateur subtitling myself so I know how difficult it is. Good luck! Hope to see new episodes soon!

Hi fan,
Sorry to tell you the bad news, but we are putting this project on hold for the time being as we have more things to focus upon. We do have up to ep15 subs done, but we will not be releasing the hardsubbed videos until further notice.

If you or any proficient English/Chinese language fans want to help us continue with this project, please contact ZillyPomi and then we will try to work on it.

Our current project priorities are as follows: HSDS, The Myth, & Zimi website.

I really liked the series (at least the first few episodes I saw). You guys did a great job and I really hope you will release the other episodes you've translated at some time too!

Where does one download the softsubs from 5 - 15?

Any recommendations where to download the raw avi/mkv for those episodes?

I want to watch, but when I click on the link given it just shows an American Anti-piracy error message. What can I do? I'd really like to watch and enjoy all your hard work of subbing! Thanks for any advice~
